Crystal Ocean

As I live on a boat I’ve always been fascinated by the movement of water be it a river or sea. This piece was inspired by the frozen oceans and how icebergs seem to grow out of the ice.

Technique: I first built up the centre to a slight dome, placing the crystal into the centre then the labour intensive cutting of each piece to build up around (like tiling a roof.)all the pieces were ground to take off the sharp edges. starting with clear irridised glass mixed with different shades of turquoise graduating to darker shades at the outer edges.I placed mirror around, then glued different shades of turquoise on top, then grouted just the flat area, by placeing the mirror underneath, when the light shines on it the effect is just like looking into an oily sea.

Remarks: I had an exhibition on and decided to show it (although there was still a few minor things I had left to do on it)and the reaction was amazing it really drew people to it ,especially when the light caught it, the depth and movement in the piece was beautiful.
